Sara Allen’s Team Won People’s Choice Award from IIDA Student Design Charette

Students from IIDA Campus Centers nationwide who were nominated to participate in the 2013 IIDA Student Design Charette competed on June 11th for the coveted prize in Chicago. Sara Allen and Adrian Cardenas from UNT Interior Design program participated in the Charette. The Charette featured 10 student teams facing the same design challenge with 6 hours to work. A jury of prominent Designers, architects and industry leaders did critique each team's solution and select the winners. A UNT Interior Design student, Sara Allen’s team won the People’s Choice Award.

Sara Allen Received 2013 Fort Worth CSI Scholarship

The Scholarship Committee of the Fort Worth Chapter of the Construction Specifications Institute has selected Sara Allen to receive a scholarship award in the amount of $3,000 for the 2013/14 school year. As a part of this award Sara will also receive a complimentary student membership in CSI and the Fort Worth Chapter for a period of one year, including the cost for 10 monthly Chapter meetings. She will join Annual Awards Meeting on Tuesday 18 June 2013, for the formal presentation of her award.

UNT Interior Design Student Recipients of NEWH Scholarships Attended Banquet

Among nine recipients of 2013 NEWH Scholarships three recipients are UNT Interior Design juniors. Sara Allen received $1000, Rebecca Christy received $5000, and Megan Crase received $7000 from NEWH. They accepted their awards in the NEWH Annual Scholarship Banquet on June 5th at the Perot Museum of Nature and Science.

Ashley Henderson Selected for Southwest Airlines NoLimits Internship

Ashley Henderson, UNT Interior Design 2013 graduate, has gained a spot as one of two Corporate Facilities interns with Southwest Airlines this summer at the Dallas Headquarters location. The Southwest Airlines NoLimits Internship includes numerous areas of study and is highly competitive. This summer 13,700 applied and only 84 were accepted. As an intern Ashley will gain hands on experience by assisting with SWA Headquarters upgrades and airport site management.

Gensler Gallery Talk

Eight Seniors and a Sophomore from the University of North Texas Interior Design Program were invited to exhibit and present their project work at Gensler Dallas office on May 17th, 2013.  Work will be on exhibit through the end of May.

Gensler designers Gracie Andraos and Michael Cerda coordinated the event.  Many designers attended the event, including Chuck Hagemeier, Gensler Dallas, UNT ID advisory board member.

UNT Interior Design Students Awarded NEWH Scholarships

Three UNT Interior Design juniors received 2013 NEWH Scholarships. Sara Allen received $1000, Rebecca Christy received $5000, and Megan Crase received $7000 from NEWH. The recipients will accept these at the NEWH Annual Scholarship Awards Banquet on June 5th at the Perot Museum of Nature and Science. The UNT Spring 2013 administration of SETE (Student Evaluation of Teaching) begins Monday, April 15, 2013 and continues through Sunday, May 5, 2013. As a reminder, the mobile version is a convenient way for students to complete their course evaluations.  There is no action required by you or your students to activate or access the mobile site. Five Interior Design Students Received 2013 UNT CVAD Scholarships

2013 UNT Interior Design Senior Show: 4/27 – 5/2

2013 Senior Show of Interior Design program in the College of Visual Arts & Design (CVAD) at the University of North Texas (UNT) will be held during April 27 through May 2 in the Lightwell and North Galleries at the UNT Art Building. This Senior Show is an annual design showcase of senior students’ research-based final projects which are, not limited to, residential, commercial, hospitality, and healthcare design. The show is free and open to the public so please come and celebrate!

On April 5, 2013, Kim Dickerson received the award for the College of Visual Arts and Design Outstanding Senior in Interior Design at the annual UNT Honors Day Convocation

Kim is scheduled to graduate with a BFA in Interior Design in May 2013. During her undergraduate career at UNT, she has maintained a standard of excellence in creative, academic and service activities. She received numerous awards including the ASID (American Society of Interior Designers) 2012 Student Scholarship and the Lucile Ayres Payne Scholarship in Interior Design for 2012. Ms. Dickerson is also an HKS Design Fellow. She was selected to participate in the 2012 Design Charrette sponsored by HKS Architects in Dallas, a prestigious honor for an undergraduate interior design student. Ms. Dickerson is a member of the CVAD Interior Design Student Alliance and a student member of professional design organizations including ASID and NEWH, The Hospitality Industry Network.

Kim expresses her career goal “to one day provide innovative and sustainable solutions for the problems designers, architects and society as a whole face in the twenty-first century.”

Curb Appeal Renovations in Keller is looking for a junior designer that possesses CAD knowledge and has the ability to adapt quickly to learning new software (or preference of having Chief Architect and 20/20 knowledge).  Curb Appeal Renovations is an award winning design/build remodeling company.  This position will take field measurements of residences and produce as-builts. Once candidate has become familiar with software, the position will assist in producing cabinet orders, designs for projects and creating tile designs and take-offs. The position will also pull specifications for client selections and create job binders.

2013 Fort Worth Chapter CSI Scholarship

The Fort Worth Chapter of the Construction Specifications Institute Scholarship program for 2013 is available. Applicants may be entering freshmen or returning college students for the 2013/14 school year. Applicants must be majoring in a design profession related to the built environment such as Architecture, Engineering (i.e. Civil, HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical, Structural, Environmental, etc.), Landscape Architecture, Interior Design, or a construction-related field such as Construction Management or Construction Engineering. UNT Interior Design Team Project Selected As Top Three Southwest Regional Finalists to National IDEC Competition

The UNT Interior Design team project of Tonia Finger, Bridget Williams, and Larry Joe Byer was selected as top three Southwest regional finalists to the IDEC (Interior Design Educator Council) Student Design Competition. The UNT team designed a college space that met the design challenge with a focus on cultural diversity, multiple learning styles and innovative technology under guidance by Interior Design faculty, Cynthia Mohr and Ty Lee. The Southwest region had eighteen submissions to the competition this year and the top three were sent forward to the IDEC national conference in Indianapolis, IN to compete among all regions. There were fifteen total projects brought to this level of the competition from schools across the U.S. and Canada.

The 2012 IDEC competition challenged interior design students to create an innovative college learning space that considered past and present teaching methodologies and the use of technology in the learning environment. The given parameters included the use of existing materials such as wood paneling and brick and space requirements that included a café, a classroom, and a lounge area.

UNT Interior Design Student Winners at IIDA Student Conference

The 2013 IIDA (International Interior Design Association) Texas Oklahoma Chapter's Student Conference in Houston brings together students, professionals, educators, and manufacturers' representatives for two days of academic and professional enrichment. The conference hosted about 150 students from universities and interior design programs across Texas, Oklahoma, and the central United States.

The mission of the IIDA Texas Oklahoma Chapter's Student Conference is to provide a comprehensive educational experience focused on the application of progressive and practical design solutions in conjunction with insight from practicing professionals. Students participated in a myriad of activities focused on exploring varying avenues of design disciplines and applications.

Design Charrette:
The Design Charrette was composed of the top students from each Campus Center who were then split into groups.  Students were given four hours to provide a design solution for the problem administered by the local architecture firm Ziegler +Cooper.

Sara Allen, UNT Interior Design junior, was the recipient of the IIDA Tuition Reimbursement Scholarship.  Letters of recommendation, a statement of interest, experience and service to IIDA, the campus, and community are all criteria for the scholarship.  The largest part of the decision making process is the portfolio submitted by the student.

CVAD Continuing Student 2013-2014 Scholarship

CVAD Continuing Student Scholarships are available. These scholarships (most of which are for $1,000) are for students in all programs and all levels. The deadline is Feb. 1 at 4:00 p.m. All you need to do is go to CVAD website and click on the hyperlink for CVAD ContinuingStudent 2013-2014 Scholarship under Student Services. That will take you to a page that tells you what you need to gather and how to format that material. The application is a web form and should be easy.
